These earrings are handcrafted in the stylized pomegranate motif frequently seen in Mexico. Pomegranates were prominent in the seal of Granada, Spain and the motif was introduced to Mexico by the Spanish during colonial times. The silversmiths from Mexico in turn taught the Native Americans in the southwest the art of silversmithing. The pomegranate motif became prominent in southwestern jewelry and over time was renamed a squash blossom.
