This beautiful cross pin was created in the "Matl" studio and designed by Matilde Poulat. Matilde Poulat was a contemporary of Diego Rivera and an instructor of the arts at the prestigious San Carlos Art Academy in Mexico City. She was one of the first to incorporate indigenous motifs with colonial design to create jewelry that was uniquely Mexican in character. This cross pin is from her earliest design period and in excellent vintage condition.
Details:
Pin / brooch is 2 1/8 inches wide and 2 1/8 inches high. Weight is 0.8 ounces. Markings are "Matl" in script and "Matl Hecho en Mexico 925". The mark is a double strike and difficult to read. The brooch / pin is composed of sterling silver with turquoise & coral. The pin was created prior to 1948 when the Eagle marking system went into effect. The "Matl" hallmark on this piece dates from 1934 - 1948.
